The UK banking sector is considered as the largest banking sector in Europe. It is equally the 4th largest banking sector in the world. There are 300 banks in the UK and there are up to 45 building societies. The 300 banks have up to 9000 branches spread across the UK. They also have up to 70,000 ATMS in total. The UK banking sector employs up to 2.2 million people.

 

 

The Big Four Banks are:

The Big Four Banks control up to 75% of all the current accounts in the UK and also control about 85% of all the business accounts. The Big Four equally controls up to 5 trillion pounds in total assets and they employ about a quarter of all those working the UK banking sector  

UK banks are classified into three, which are:

  • Independent British retail banks
  • Banks incorporated in the UK
  • UK retail brands owned by  foreign banks

 

The independent British retail banks

  • HSBC Holdings has its headquarters in Canary Wharf London, England. Its total assets is 1,936 billion pounds
  • Lloyds Banking Group has its headquarters in the city of London, London, UK and its total assets is 817 billion pounds
  • Royal Bank of Scotland group with its headquarters at Edinburgh, Scotland. Its total asset is 783 billion pounds.
  • Barclays has its headquarters at Canary Wharf, London, England and has a total asset of 1203 billion pounds
  • Standard Chattered Bank has its headquarters in the City of London and a total asset of 526 billion pounds.

The Lloyd Banking Group consists of the following:

  • Lloyds Bank
  • Bank of Scotland, which include Intelligent Finance, Birmingham Midshires and Halifax.

Royal Bank of Scotland Group consists of Ulster Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest Bank.
